报告摘要 |
Long-term reliable neural interfacing requires both physical and functional integration of the neural interface with the target tissues. Such integration is challenging to achieve with contemporary neural interfaces, and, as a result, neural implants frequently cause bio-fouling and tissue damage, ultimately leading to failure of the implant. Research efforts on various aspects are ongoing to mitigate the challenges and improve the long-term performance of neural interfaces. Among such efforts, the pursuit of soft neural interfaces for minimizing the mechanical impedance mismatch between the implant and surrounding soft tissues is expected to reduce the stress-induced inflammation and scar tissue encapsulation around neural implants. We have been working on this strategy for the last decade and developed technologies to produce a variety of stretchable multielectrode arrays (sMEAs).In this talk, using our efforts on the development of sMEAs as an example, I will review this multidisciplinary pursuit of chronically reliable neural interfaces by analyzing the problem, abstracting the engineering principles, and summarizing the corresponding engineering strategies. |
