报告摘要 | Biofouling has been conceived as one of the main obstacles in membrane processes such as membrane bioreactor (MBR) as well as the reverse osmosis/nanofiltration process (RO/NF). Many researchers have tried to mitigate biofouling in various ways, for example, through the change in membrane material, addition of additives or media, changes in system design or operation mode, etc. However, such physico-chemical or engineering approaches to the biofouling problem might not be fundamental solutions because biofouling is an intrinsic natural phenomenon taking place in a ‘complex living community’. In 2008, a revolutionary anti-fouling strategy in MBR was proposed by Lee’s group at Seoul National University, South Korea, by applying the quorum quenching (QQ), i.e., stopping chatter or the disruption of quorum sensing (QS) between microorganisms, which regulates their group behaviors including biofilm formation via the secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). Since then, QQ-MBR has made progress continuously in terms of QQ-Microorganisms, QQ-Media, and size of QQ-MBR. In this presentation, behind stories during the evolution of QQ-MBR will be disclosed from its birth to present status. |

报告人简介:Mr. Chung-Hak Lee received PhD in Environmental Engineering from INSA de Toulouse, France in 1980. He had been Professor (1989 ~ 2017) at School of Chemical & Biological Engineering, and is presently Professor Emeritus, Seoul National University (SNU), South Korea. He had been a director of Institute of Environmental Protection and Safety in SNU (2004-2008). He had served as a chairman for Membrane Technology Specialist Group (MTSG), International Water Association (IWA) for four years (2010 to 2013) and is now an IWA Fellow. He devoted himself to the development of membrane-based innovative water/wastewater technology, focussing on the control of membrane fouling. Particularly, he opened a new horizon to biofouling control and energy savings in membrane processes through linking molecular biology (Quorum sensing/quenching) and engineering science in the field of water and wastewater treatment. Since 2009, he has coordinated dissemination of QQ-technology for membrane processes to research groups over ten countries. In 2017, he received ‘Membrane Technology Award’ by MTSG, IWA for his outstanding and innovative contribution to membrane biofouling control using quorum quenching. | |
