摘要

In the carbon constrained world today, climate change, long-term energy supply, clean water and environment are among the top ten challenges humanity is facing in the next century. Demands are growing for innovative technologies for renewable energy generation and storage, water purification, desalination and recycling, as well as CO2 capture and utilisation. Sustainable energy and associated clean technologies are not only big challenges but also great business opportunities globally. Underpinning the strong development in such a “cleantech” sector are innovations in new materials and devices enabled by advances in nanoscience and nanomaterials, as well as advanced manufacturing processes.

Nanotechnology has tremendous potential in enabling the development of clean technologies in many ways, for example, through more efficient harvesting of sun light, thermoelectric materials to harvest energy low grade heat, high density energy storage technology e.g. in batteries and for hydrogen storage, or by enabling light-weight materials for transportation or improving energy efficiency of industrial production and of household energy use (e.g. through fuel cells, catalysis, low energy lighting) and enabling technologies to reduce and cleaning up harmful emissions and wastewater. In this talk, I will give an overview of the nanotechnologies that are being developed for clean energy, water and CO2 utilization with some perspectives on their impacts and future directions.
