摘要

Nanomaterials form versatile building blocks with tunable properties, opening up many exciting opportunities in nanoscience and nanotechnology. In this talk, I will discuss our efforts in development of new III-V nanostructures for high performance nanoelectronics with low power consumption and exploration of graphene for biomedical applications. For electronic application, I will present our development on high quality GaSb and InSb nanowires and a simple yet powerful model developed to understand transport in narrow bandgap nanowires device, III-V device particularly, with schottky contacts. This powerful analysis offers insightful understanding to bridge material development and device application and serves as guidance in small bandgap nanomaterial transistor design. I will also discuss development of graphene as a biocompatible protective film for metal potentially for biomedical applications. Cell viability tests with presence of graphene coated Cu suggested graphene greatly eliminates the toxicity of metal by inhibiting corrosion and reducing the concentration of Cu ions produced. We demonstrated that graphene coating reduced the immune response to metal through the lymphocyte transformation test and in vivo experiments. Finally, I will present characterization of graphene using a new label-free, high resolution, high throughput optical imaging technique with single layer sensitivity and potential resolution of grain boundaries.
