Current interest in assembling inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) stems from their collective properties that may vastly differ from discrete NPs and corresponding bulk materials. Despite recent breakthroughs in NP synthesis, controlled assembly of NPs into architectures with desired complexity and functionality remains a challenge. The anchoring of polymers onto inorganic NP surfaces offers a powerful route to direct the self-assembly of NPs into defined structures with new or advanced properties that are originated from the combination features of both inorganic NP cores and tethered polymers. However, the assembly behaviors of polymer-grafted NPs are still not well understood and there remains challenging to precisely control the organization of such hybrid building blocks. In this talk, I will present our efforts on the precise self-assembly of polymer-grafted NPs as giant atoms to generate discrete supracolloids with high symmetry and precision in solutions. The supracolloids covered with hairy polymers resemble the geometric arrangement of atoms in binary molecular compounds. The valence-like bonding between NPs is largely attributed to the conformation change of polymers on binary building blocks. The valences and surface patches (i.e., local surface chemistry) of the supracolloids can be precisely tuned by controlling the polymer ligands on nanoparticle surfaces. It is remarkable that these supracolloids can further assemble into hierarchical structures via directional interactions between polymeric patches on supracolloids. This assembly strategy opens up a new realm of possibilities for synthesizing functional materials with broad applications in coating, sensing, biomedicine, metamaterials and photonic crystals.

2000年本科毕业于吉林大学化学系,2003年于中科院长春应用化学研究所安立佳研究员(中国科学院院士)指导下获得高分子物理与化学硕士学位,2008年于加拿大多伦多大学Eugenia Kumacheva教授(加拿大皇家科学院院士)指导下获得高分子材料与化学博士学位。2008-2010年间于哈佛大学George M. Whiteside教授(美国科学院、工程院、艺术与科学院三院院士)研究组进行NSERC博士后研究。2011年受聘为马里兰大学帕克分校化学与生物化学系助理教授开展教学和科研工作,并于2017年升任终身教授(Tenured Associate Professor)。曾荣获美国自然科学基金会杰出青年教授奖、3M公司青年教授奖、美国化学会石油研究基金奖、马里兰大学优秀教授奖、加拿大自然科学与工程研究理事会博士后奖、加拿大CAGS/UMI优秀博士论文奖、加拿大MSED/LANXESS博士论文奖、多伦多大学优秀化学博士奖、国家优秀自费留学生奖学金等奖项。主要研究领域为微流控器件、粒子合成与自组装、高分子无机复合材料、生物成像和药物释放、高分子智能材料以及生物矿化等。迄今在Science, Nat. Materials., Nat. Nanotech., Nat. Commun., J. Am. Chem. Soc., Angew. Chem. Int. Ed.等国际高水平权威期刊上发表论文近100篇(其中作为第一作者/通讯作者发表68篇),论文被引用10000余次。13项成果被C&EN News、Chemistry World、Thomson Reuters、Nature、Nature Nanotechnology、Nature Photonics等杂志或媒体重点专题报道。获授权美国专利7项,撰写国外学术专著3章。
